In “Drifters,” a loafer named Er Di returns to his Chinese birthplace after being thrown out of the United States for working illegally and impregnating his boss’s daughter. His trips to America have given him some status back home, but do not help dispel his family’s disillusionment with their slacker “second son.” When Er Di’s American-born son comes to China for a visit, he is barred from seeing him. At the same time, he becomes involved with a beautiful member of a touring Shanghai opera company. Caught between his past and his future, his son’s culture and his own, Er Di seeks bonds with both. “Drifters” offers audiences a glimpse of the complex consequences of migration, immigration and re-migration.

“Drifters” is the final movie in this summer’s “Indies on Tuesdays” film series. It will play on Tuesday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Reif Center. There is no cost for admission, thanks to a partnership between the Grand Rapids Area Library and Reif Center, and support from Rivers Wine Bar and Bistro. For more information, call the Reif at 327-5780 or visit www.reifcenter.org.
