Zeroville, the film directed James Franco, will be screened out of competition in the Official Selection and will not be able to compete for the Golden Shell, due to having been released in commercial cinemas in Russia only a few days prior to its screening at the 67th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

The producers of Zeroville originally confirmed it’s submission according to the Festival regulations, establishing that feature films in the official competition must not have been released outside their country (in this case the USA). However, the film has been released in Russia a week before coming to the San Sebastian Festival, meaning that it can no longer participate as a contender for the Golden Shell.

Zeroville stars James Franco, Megan Fox, Seth Rogen, Joey King, Jacki Weaver, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson.

Based on the novel by Steve Erickson, Vikar, a socially awkward architecture student inspired by the few films he has seen, rides the bus into Hollywood. With a tattoo of Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor as they appear in A Place in the Sun on his shaved head, Vikar makes an impression on the beautiful actress Soledad. Soon breaking into film as a designer and eventually a film editor, Vikar begins a dreamlike journey into the world of films that eventually ends in tragedy and almost horrific discovery.
