Iceland has selected the mother-daughter drama Agnes Joy (Hæ, hó Agnes Joy) directed by Silja Hauksdóttir as its submission for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.

In the film starring Anna Kristín Arngrímsdóttir, Edda Arnljótsdóttir, Þorsteinn Bachmann, Þórey Birgisdóttir, Arnmundur Ernst Björnsson, Donna Cruz, and Ebba Katrín Finnsdóttir, a mother fears that her rebellious daughter will grow up and leave her behind.

Rannveig is experiencing burnout in all aspects of her mundane suburban life. She’s stuck with a job she hates and a marriage that is slowly dying. On top of that, she’s constantly fighting with her rebellious daughter, Agnes, and can’t face the possibility of Agnes growing up and leaving her behind. When a new neighbor, Hreinn, shows up at their doorstep, Rannveig and her family face new challenges that are beyond their control.

Agnes Joy recently swept the 21st Edda Awards winning six awards including Best Film, Best Script, Best Actress for Katla Margrét Þorgeirsdóttir and Best Supporting Actor for Björn Hlynur Haraldsson.

Filmmaker Silja Hauksdóttir is a writer/director from Reykjavík who directed her first feature film, Dís, in 2004. Dís was adapted from a best-selling novel, which Silja co-wrote. She’s also directed the documentary, The Choir, and written and directed several comedy TV series and shows. She graduated with a MFA in Performing Arts from the Icelandic Academy of the Arts in 2018.
