IFC Films acquired The Origin of Evil (L’Origine du Mal), the thriller from writer and director Sébastien Marnier (Faultless, School’s Out) starring Laure Calamy (Cesar winner for My Donkey, My Lover & I and star of Call My Agent), Doria Tillier, Dominique Blanc, Jacques Weber, Suzanne Clément, Céleste Brunnquell, and Véronique Ruggia Saura, for release in the US. The Origin of Evil world premiered at the Venice Film Festival, followed by its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. IFC Films will release the film in 2023.
The Origin of Evil follows Stéphane (Laure Calamy), a modest woman living in financial precarity. When her living situation takes a turn for the worse, she decides to reconnect with her estranged father, Serge (Jacques Weber), who after abandoning her and her mother years earlier, has become incredibly wealthy with a massive estate. As Stéphane enters this new world fueled by secrets and betrayals, she slowly realizes that Serge may not be the genial patriarch she believed him to be. As tension mounts and a cutthroat conflict over inheritance ensues, battle lines are drawn, and nothing is as it seems.
Director Sébastien Marnier added, “I’m so grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response to The Origin of Evil upon its world premiere. I’m so happy and proud to have IFC on board!”
