Pelé, regarded as the greatest soccer player of all-time, and the subject of the documentary Pelé, died on Thursday in São Paulo, Brazil. He was 82.
His death was confirmed in a post on his official Twitter account, “Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever.”

Pelé had been battling advanced cancer, and recently announced that he was receiving “elevated care” related to “kidney and cardiac dysfunctions.”
Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, he led Brazil to three World Cup championships in 1958, 1962, and 1970, and finished his career with the New York Cosmos. In the 1958 World Cup, he scored two goals in the championship game against Sweden.
Directed by David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholashe, the Netflix documentary titled Pelé, chronicles the life of Pelé from his childhood, his soccer triumphs up until his last soccer station with the New York Cosmos soccer team. It includes lots of archival footage including his games, his and other interviews, news reels etc. The film sometimes also touches on the political background in Brazil, including the dictatorship.
