SYNOPSIS

The Convert is a historical epic story exploring questions of faith, transformation, and the nature of violence; a visceral cinema-going experience, ambitious in scope and action, the film is also one of the most authentic and exciting depictions of pre-colonial Aotearoa New Zealand and Māori culture ever portrayed on screen.

Lee Tamahori’s action-filled historical epic stars Guy Pearce as Thomas Munro, a newly arrived lay preacher in a British town in early 19th-century New Zealand who finds himself at the center of a long-standing battle between two Māori tribes, drawing his violent past into question and putting his faith to the test.

Award-winning Director Lee Tamahori says about The Convert, “The film allows us to see Māori as they were before the influence of Europeans changed their lives forever; agriculture, clothing, weaponry, transport, and most important of all their relationship with the land, waterways, and sea. This is a film where the European community exists in the Māori world on Māori terms.”
