Netflix debuted the trailer for ‘Daughters’, a documentary from co-directors filmmaker Natalie Rae and activist Angela Patton. The film follows a program by organization Camp Diva that reunites incarcerated fathers with their daughters for a father-daughter dance to bond their relationships and empower their children.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, winning the award for Audience Award: U.S. Documentary.

Synopsis
Four young girls prepare for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers, as part of a unique fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C., jail.
Fathers in the program take part in therapy sessions before the final event: a daddy-daughter dance in which the men trade their state-issued clothing for semiformal attire and reunite with their daughters for a sweet moment of familial closeness. After a 2012 TEDWomen talk about Date with Dad went viral, filmmaker Natalie Rae approached Patton about chronicling the program on camera. Patton agreed, and after eight years of filming, Daughters will be soon be available on Netflix.
Reviews
David Ehrlich in an Indiewire review praised the film giving it a B+ score, describing the film as “An enormously moving documentary made all the more effective by co-directors Angela Patton and Natalie Rae’s steadfast refusal to settle for easy sentiment in the face of difficult outcomes.”
Daniel Fienberg in a Hollywood Reporter review also praised the film, writing “Reservations aside, I still came away from Daughters emotionally wrung out like a damp washcloth and infuriated at a system of punishment that too often fails everybody.”
