The Sparrow Film Project is an annual short film competition. based in Queens and international in scope, that challenges filmmakers to make three-minute films in three weeks. For each round, filmmakers are guided by a different set of criteria based on a new theme, and each team draws a unique assignment from a hat.
The Sparrow Film Project 10th year anniversary theme was Sound and Vision, and centered around perspective and inspiration. What is art? What makes art, art? What does art mean to the individual and how does it uniquely affect each one of us? For the first portion of the assignment, each team was randomly assigned a work of art (painting, sculpture, photograph, etc.). Each art piece is meant to be interpreted and inspire the story of the film. This year, the filmmaking teams were challenged to create a 3-minute film juxtaposing two mediums, to explore how sound and vision inform their creation.
Starting with this year’s 10th anniversary, The Sparrow Film Project is being presented under the Kaufman Arts District. The Sparrow Film Project is made possible with major sponsorship from Kaufman Astoria Studios and is presented in partnership with the Kaufman Arts District (KAD), which creates, supports and presents public arts installations and events in the Astoria community.
The winners of the Sparrow Film Project 2018 were announced at The Sparrow Film Project 2018 Gala and Awards Ceremony held at Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria Queens. The grand prize winner for Best Film received $1,000, and all other winners received $100 Gift Certificate to B&H.
