Among the Featured Speakers revealed are Clovyr co-founder Amber Baldet; singer and actor Lance Bass; Black Girls CODE founder Kimberly Bryant; musician and activist Laura Jane Grace; puppeteer, director and producer Frank Oz; Backstage Capital founder Arlan Hamilton; actor and comedian Kevin Hart; philosopher and writer Jaron Lanier; actress and producer Elisabeth Moss; The Daily Show host Trevor Noah; actress and writer Busy Philipps; GSD&M chairman and co-founder Roy Spence; and more. Additionally, best-selling author and researcher Brené Brown has been added as the SXSW 2019 Opening Speaker. Jessica Brillhart, founder of independent studio Vrai Pictures, is an immersive director, writer, and theorist. She was the Principal Filmmaker for VR at Google where she worked with engineers to develop Google Jump, a virtual reality live-action capture ecosystem. Brillhart joins previously-announced Keynotes Joseph Lubin (Interactive), Shirley Manson and Lauren Mayberry (Music), Marti Noxon (Film), and Kevin Systrom with Josh Constine (Interactive). “A shining star in the immersive arts community, Jessica Brillhart is an early explorer trying to define storytelling in the immersive world and she’s spearheaded early innovation in creating stories using VR, AR, and AI,” said Janet Pierson, Director of Film. “We are excited to share her perspectives on this exciting field, as well as from our many esteemed Featured Speakers in entertainment, business and technology.” SXSW Conference programming is organized into 25 tracks divided between Interactive, Film, Music, and Convergence, presented in a variety of session formats. Once again, SXSW is offering expanded access to events for all registrants. Attendees will receive primary access to programming associated with their badge type but now also enjoy secondary entry to most other SXSW events.

Keynote

Jessica Brillhart (Film) — Jessica Brillhart is an immersive director, writer, and theorist. She’s the founder of the independent studio, Vrai Pictures. Previously, Jessica was the Principal Filmmaker for VR at Google where she worked with engineers to develop Google Jump, a virtual reality live-action capture ecosystem. Since then, Jessica has made a range of highly acclaimed VR experiences, working with such entities as NASA, the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence program, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Weather Channel. In 2017, Jessica was heralded by MIT Technology Review as an innovator and pioneer in the field of virtual reality filmmaking and immersive entertainment.

Featured Speakers

Elisabeth Moss (Entertainment Influencers) –– Elisabeth Moss can soon be seen in Alex Ross Perry’s HER SMELL and Jordan Peele’s Us, both of which will be opening theatrically in March of 2019. Moss is currently starring in the Emmy Award-winning Hulu drama series The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the acclaimed Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, on which she also serves as a producer. Among the many honors and accolades she has received are Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series and Best Drama Series. Other upcoming credits include In The Kitchen opposite Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish and with Michael Stuhlbarg in Shirley, which she produced, as well. Frank Oz (Entertainment Influencers) — Frank is a four-time Emmy winner and recipient of The Art Director’s Guild Award, The Comedy Awards’ Creative Achievement Award, Saturn Lifetime Achievement Award, George Foster Peabody award, and others. He’s performed with The Muppets and on the Star Wars Films. The dozen feature films he’s directed include Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, In & Out, The Score, and Death at a Funeral. Busy Philipps and Hillary Kerr (Entertainment Influencers) –– Busy Philipps is an actress best known for roles in cult TV classics like Dawson’s Creek, Freaks and Geeks, Cougar Town, ER, and most recently HBO’s Vice Principals. She has appeared in fan-favorite films such as Made of Honor, I Don’t Know How She Does It, He’s Just Not That Into You, White Chicks, and The Gift. She also was one of the writers of the hit film Blades of Glory. In fall 2018, her late-night talk show Busy Tonight premiered on E!. Hillary Kerr is the co-founder and Chief Content Officer of Clique Brands, a content, commerce, and consumer brands company that includes WhoWhatWear.com, Byrdie.com, MyDomaine.com, CollegeFashionista.com and the Who What Wear Collection. Steven Spielberg’s latest film Ready Player One, based on the global bestseller by Ernest Cline, will World Premiere tonight at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival. In the year 2045 people can escape their harsh reality in the OASIS, an immersive virtual world where you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone — the only limits are your own imagination. OASIS creator James Halliday left his immense fortune and control of the OASIS to the winner of a contest designed to find a worthy heir. When unlikely hero Wade Watts conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends — known as the High Five — are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS and their world. Spielberg directed Ready Player One from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Cline.  The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Powerful interactive web documentary, “LIFE UNDERGROUND,” created and directed by award winning filmmaker Hervé Cohen, in collaboration with installation artist and media designer Tonian Irving, will debut online March 13th as part of the 2018 SXSW Festival Arts Program.  The innovative experience will be available for viewing at life-underground.com in conjunction with a full-scale immersive installation on four large screens that will run daily from March 9 through 15 in room 306 at the JW Marriott. Life Underground is a constantly evolving, ever-growing testament to the power of personal stories to transcend barriers of race, gender, culture and religion. Filmed in 14 thriving subways around the world, including Los Angeles, Paris, Hong Kong, Berlin and Santiago, Life Underground asks viewers to stop and listen as passengers speak candidly of their hopes, dreams, triumphs and defeats. Online, Life Underground can be easily navigated using a personal electronic device, allowing viewers to experience as many stories as they desire, as well as to travel inside various train cabins and explore the landscapes of subways on an interactive map. “This interactive documentary, where metros of the world join to form a unique worldwide underground line, is a platform to explore and instigate a conversation beyond language and cultural difference, while breaking the boundaries that divide us,” said Cohen. The art installation, which made its world premiere at Los Angeles’ Union Station last January 30th through February 5th, is composed of a series of screens mounted at various angles in order to create the illusion of a staggered, illuminated passageway. Each screen runs a 35-minute loop of original footage, with audio tracks split and distributed separately to dedicated speakers throughout the space. Its sonic companion is an experimental score of music, from composer Brian Rodvien, created using raw sounds of multiple subways, which can be accessed individually on Soundcloud. The installation allows for different levels of engagement with multiple screens, and will expand with time as Hervé continues to explore the subterranean passageways of the planet in search of the stories that make it move. To date, 40 intimate stories can be accessed by clicking on the image of a silent individual as they ride a train. Viewers never see the person speak since their vocals were recorded separately. Instead, audiences are invited to watch, as if they were observing a fellow passenger with the added gift of hearing a thoughtful inner monologue. Pilar in Madrid talks about the challenges of going blind later in life; while Stefanella in Berlin opens up about wanting to become a transgender performer; and Ibra in Brussels reveals the pain of being treated cruelly as an immigrant from Senegal and his dream of one day returning to his native land. These stories serve as the connective tissue of a global journey composed of the rich sights and sounds of the world’s subways, filmed using a deeply human gaze that captures the depth of quiet moments as readily as it does the excitement of urban bustle. The full installation serves as a time capsule of life in the world’s great cities, speaking to salient themes of diversity, inclusion, classism, urbanization and social welfare.
