The Gullspång Miracle, a documentary about the eerie mysteries of a bizarre family story, will world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, running June 7-18.
An engrossing, stranger-than-fiction story of identity, family secrets and the need to believe, this feature-length debut from Swedish filmmaker Maria Fredriksson will be featured in the festival’s Documentary Competition section. It will be immediately followed by its European premiere at Sheffield DocFest.
A divine premonition leads two Norwegian sisters to buy an apartment in the small Swedish town of Gullspång. To their surprise, the seller looks identical to their older sister who died by suicide 30 years earlier. What begins as an eerie story of family reunification soon becomes a Pandora’s Box as all three women’s lives spiral out of control.
Maria Fredriksson received her Master of Fine Arts from Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2012. She has made several short documentaries that have screened at international film festivals such as Hot Docs, Visions du Réel, Sheffield DocFest, and Palm Springs. Maria is one of the founders of the all-female production company Ballad Film.
