The documentary Geoff McFetridge: Drawing A Life gives a detailed and illuminating insight into visual artist Geoff McFetridge’s life and art work. It delves further into asking a universal question of what makes a fulfilling life and how to live with intention in the limited time we all have.
Being one of the most prolific artists of his time, Geoff McFetridge has undoubtedly influenced the way the world looks with his art being everywhere; on your apple watch, in countless galleries around the world, in title designs for films by Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze, and in collaborations with Nike, Hermès, Warby Parker, and more. Moving on, “His art is everywhere” appropriately defines the documentary, Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life.
Although, the iconic work of artist Geoff McFetridge reflects a deep grasp of semiotics, the documentary is more than a primer on his career – it’s about the choices we confront in trying to lead meaningful lives, and how we use our most precious resource: time.
The antithesis of the archetypal artist fueled by drugs, alcohol, and chaos, what sets the prodigious McFetridge apart is his obsessive quest to balance family with a creative life. In Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life, director and fellow artist Dan Covert offers unprecedented access into Geoff’s multifaceted world, painting an intimate portrait of a man guided by intention and authenticity.
Directed by Dan Covert and written by Amy Dempsey (also, co-producer), the film’s producers are Spike Jonze and Dan Covert. The screenwriters are Covert, Erik Auli, Amy Dempsey, and Tara Rose Stromberg. Cinematographers are Claudio Rietti and Daniel Vecchione. The music is composed by YouTooCanWoo: David Perlick Molinari, Derek Muro.
“Like many people, I’ve been a fan of Geoff McFetridge for twenty plus years. In fact, he’s part of an era of the do-it-yourself-practicing artists of the late nineties and whose influence is everywhere. When my commercial production company was asked to make a short video about Geoff for an award he was being given in 2019, I had a feeling there might be a larger story to tell, so I approached Geoff about a feature film and having both a design education and a career as an artist, put me in a unique position to tell Geoff’s story. Though, he never really said yes to the project, he didn’t say no either; so, after several years of filming, he finally acknowledged that we were, in fact, making a feature.” – Director Dan Covert
Furthermore, Dan Covert said “while filming Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life, he turned forty and Geoff turned fifty; watching someone a decade ahead navigate life with such clear intention pushed him (Dan) and the film to explore the universal question: how do we use our most precious resource, time?”
Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life premiered at SXSW, and opens in theatres in New York City on June 21, 2024 and on VOD on July 2, 2024.
