Synopsis
When Cirque du Soleil moves to reboot its flagship production, O, more than a year after an abrupt global shutdown, both performers and crew members face uncertainty as they work to return to their world-class standards in time for the (re)opening night curtain in Las Vegas. With unprecedented access, filmmaker Dawn Porter captures the dramatic personal highs and lows of the world’s most famous circus act on its journey back from the existential brink.
Reviews
Glenn Kenny in a New York Times review praised the film, writing “Porter’s inquisitive camera gives the viewer enticing detail on how everything comes together while holding in suitable awe the actual magic all this work eventually yields.”
John Fink in a The Film Stage review gave the film a B score, writing “‘Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net’ is the latest character study from Porter – is most compelling when it remains in cinéma vérité mode, watching the cast and crew’s preparations to fly and walk on water. Cinematographers Chris Hilleke and Bryant Fisher capture the action above and below the water at a distance, while creating intimate portraits of the performers at home in suburban Las Vegas.”
