Making its world premier earlier this year at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, The Damned marks the feature film directorial debut of Thordur Palsson. Written by Jamie Hannigan, this period psychological horror film follows a widow who faces a dilemma when a ship becomes stranded in her isolated fishing outpost.
The Damned stars Odessa Young, Joe Cole, Siobhan Finneran, Rory McCann, Turlough Convery, Lewis Gribben, Francis Magee, Mícheál Óg Lane, Andrean Sigurgeirsson, Guillermo Uria, and Arnar Máni Iansson Gray.

Synopsis
Starring Odessa Young and Joe Cole, The Damned follows a 19th-century widow who is tasked with making an impossible choice when a ship sinks off the coast of her isolated fishing outpost during the middle of an especially cruel winter. With provisions running low, Eva and her close-knit community must choose between rescuing the shipwrecked crew and prioritizing their own survival. Facing the consequences of their decision and tormented by guilt, the inhabitants wrestle with a mounting sense of dread and begin to believe they are all being punished for their choices.
Reviews
Dan Bayer in a Next Best Picture review gave the film a positive score of 7/10, writing, “Between the intensity of the performances and the visceral imagery, “The Damned” is an atmospheric trip into the heart of darkness, one that will chill you to the bone even in the height of summer.”
Siddhant Adlakha in a Variety review praised the film, writing, “It remains alluring for as long as it does — thanks in large part to Young’s magnetic performance, as a young woman burdened by responsibility — is a testament to its strengths as a psychological, atmospheric piece about deep remorse. That’s a specter that doesn’t need physical form to be terrifying, but it’s one given one too many regardless.”
