RIP: Gene Deitch, Oscar Winning Animator Dead at 95

Gene Deitch, American-born Czech illustrator, animator, comics artist, and film director died during the night from Thursday to Friday in his apartment in Prague. He was 95.

Munro directed by Gene Deitch won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1961. The film tells the story of a rebellious little boy who is accidentally drafted into the United States Army. No matter which adult he tells “I’m only four”, they all fail to notice his age.

He was also nominated for the same award twice in 1964 for “Here’s Nudnik” and “How to Avoid Friendship.”

Deitch was also known for creating animated cartoons such as Tom Terrific, as well as his work on the Popeye and Tom and Jerry series.

Survivors include his wife Zdenka, and three sons Kim, Simon, and Seth, from his first marriage, all of them cartoonists and illustrators.
