RIP. Olympia Dukakis, Academy Award-Winning Actress Dies at 89

Olympia Dukakis, winner of the Academy Award and Golden Globe for her performance in Moonstruck (1987) and the subject of the documentary about her life, titled Olympia, died today in New York City. She was 89.

Her brother Apollo Dukakis , made the announcement earlier today in a post on his Facebook page, writing, “My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis.”

In addition to Moonstruck, Dukakis has appeared in more than 60 feature and short films, including Steel Magnolias, Cloudburst, Dad, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Working Girl, Look Who’s Talking I, II & III, Mighty Aphrodite, Jeffrey, Away From Her, among many others.

In 2018, Olympia, a documentary film about her life and career premiered at DOC NYC. The film, directed by Harry Mavromichalis, features Whoopi Goldberg, Laura Linney, Ed Asner, Diane Ladd, and her cousin Governor Michael Dukakis.

In 2021, Dukakis made her final appearance in the film Not To Forget, which aims to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Alzheimer’s. The movie, directed by Valerio Zanoli, stars Karen Grassle and five Academy Award winners: Olympia Dukakis, Cloris Leachman, Louis Gossett Jr., Tatum O’Neal, and George Chakiris.
