Here is a new clip from the South African caper heist comedy feature film, The Umbrella Men, making its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 10th, 2022, as a selection of the international arm of its Contemporary World Cinema slate.

The Umbrella Men is directed by John Barker (“Bunny Chow: Know Thyself,” “Isibaya”) and stars Jaques Da Silva, Shamilla Miller, Keenan Arrison and Bronte Snell.

The film, set in the colorful and culture-rich Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town The Umbrella Me, follows a troupe of musicians who are forced to rob a bank during the city’s Carnival in an effort to save their beloved nightclub – spiritual home to their whole community.

In the clip, Jerome (Jaques Da Silva) strolls outside the Goema Club and is met by Mortimer (Keenan Arrison) and Mila (Bronté Snell). Mila hands him an eviction notice. Disheartened, Jerome discusses the bank’s unwillingness to reach an agreement over their one million Rand debt. Mila believes that they could settle this by running events such as corporate gigs, jazz, and dance evenings. Jerome is not convinced, and is faced by the harsh reality that he may lose everything that his family has built over the years.
