Release Date
Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, ‘The Outrun’ opens in UK theaters on September 27, 2024 and in US theaters on October 4, 2024.
Synopsis
Rona, fresh out of rehab, returns to the wild Orkney Islands after more than a decade away. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her childhood merge with the more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.
In an interview with Filmmaker Magazine, director Nora Fingscheidt commented on the process of adapting the memoir, saying, “It’s a very challenging book to translate into a film because it is so personal and internal; much of it is about memory. But what makes it so beautiful is Amy’s thought process about the world.”
Reviews
David Ehrlich in an IndieWire review gave the film a score of B+, writing “Ronan is alive and responsive in a way that prevents her from ever feeling like a film character, even when ‘The Outrun’ gets stuck in the familiar rut of addiction dramas, and its erratic timeline starts to feel like an exasperating distraction from the broad strokes of a story we all know far too well.”
Cody Dericks in a Next Best Picture review gave the film a score of 8/10, praising Ronan’s performance, writing “Rona is a deep well of conflicting, contradicting, and complementary characteristics. Ronan has the experience and the ability to portray all aspects of her with respect, care, and a compelling energy that keeps audiences invested.”
