Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama Marriage Story leads all films in the Vancouver Film Critics Circle’s international section with five nominations including Best Picture.
The Farewell, Pain and Glory and Parasite are up for Best Foreign Language Film, while Apollo 11, For Sama, and Honeyland are nominated for Best Documentary.
Matthew Rankin’s The Twentieth Century leads all films in the Vancouver Film Critics’ Circles’ Canadian section with seven nominations.
Rankin’s fabulist concoction is nominated for Best Picture alongside Kazik Radwanski’s Anne at 13,000 ft and Kathleen Hepburn and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open. Rankin, Radwanski, and Hepburn and Tailfeathers are all nominated for Best Director. And in the Best Screenplay category, Rankin and Radwanski are joined by Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis for White Lie.
In the Best BC Film category, The Body Remembers is nominated alongside Because We Are Girls and Raf.
One to Watch recognizes the promise exhibited by emerging directors. This year’s class includes Heather Young (Murmur), Matthew Rankin (The Twentieth Century), and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open).
The Best Canadian Documentary nominees are Because We Are Girls, Danny, and nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up.
Winners in the international categories will be announced on Monday, December 16; and winners of the Canadian awards will be announced at the VFCC’s awards ceremony on Monday January 6, 2020.
