Dave Franco’s directorial debut The Rental knocked Relic out of the number one spot on the box office charts after being at the top for the last three weeks. The Rental, which was released on Friday July 24th, scored this summer’s biggest (and widest) opening weekend for a new movie so far.
The Dailymail credits part of the film’s success to drive-in theaters, although they only make up about one-third of all theaters currently open.
I have been truly fortunate to have a partner in IFC Films whose agility and creativity during this time has allowed us to have this incredible moment for our film. As a first-time filmmaker, I’m beyond grateful to the audiences who supported us this weekend.

Globally, Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula is the closest thing the industry has seen to a breakout box office hit. The South Korean zombie apocalypse flick opened in several Asian territories last weekend with $20 million and has now earned $20 million in South Korea alone.
