The Tribeca and Vancouver film festivals award-winning drama film My Wonderful Wanda will open in theaters and virtual cinemas at BAM in New York, at Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles, and in many cities across the US on April 23, 2021.
Directed by Bettina Oberli, My Wonderful Wanda is described as a delightful satire of the “haves” and the “have-nots” set against the backdrop of a gorgeous lakeside villa in Switzerland.
At the story’s center is Wanda (Agnieszka Grochowska, In Darkness) a Polish caretaker who has left her own small children with her parents in Poland to look after Josef (André Jung) the stroke-ridden patriarch of the wealthy Wegmeister-Gloor dynasty. Wanda is adept in navigating the tricky family dynamics between the two grown (if still childish) offspring and the elegant if controlling matriarch Elsa (Marthe Keller). When Wanda becomes pregnant the destinies of her Polish family and Joseph’s family intertwine, and this unexpected event turns everything upside down.
One of Switzerland’s leading directors, Bettina Oberli’s award-winning debut North Wind premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Her second feature, Late Bloomers, was a box office success in Switzerland. Her next film, With The Wind, won the Variety Piazza Grande Award at the Locarno Film Festival. My Wonderful Wanda had its World Premiere at the Zurich Film Festival, marking the first time that a female-directed film opened the festival.
