The Architecture & Design Film Festival (ADFF), the film festival devoted to architecture and design, will return to New York in person this fall for its 13th edition at the Cinépolis Chelsea (260 West 23rd Street) from September 29 – October 3.

Following its virtual premiere at SXSW ‘21, ADFF:NY’s opening night will feature the in-person world premiere of MAU, the first-ever, feature-length documentary about design visionary, Bruce Mau. The film explores the creative dark horse and his unlikely journey from a world-class graphic designer to designer of the world. A pioneer of life-centered, transformative design, Mau’s work spans a range of creative endeavors. He has advised global brands like Coca Cola and Disney, reimagined the future of Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, worked with some of the greatest living architects, and even rebranded nations like Guatemala and Denmark. The film also highlights Mau’s wife, co-founder, designer and Chief Insights Officer of the Massive Change Network and the engine behind their shared enterprise, Bisi Williams. Written and directed by Austrian filmmakers Benji and Jono Bergmann, the film tells a character-driven story interwoven with Mau’s 24 principles for Massive Change. The Bergmann brothers and Bisi Williams will join Bruce Mau for the opening night screenings and festivities held at the prestigious Directors Guild Theatre located at 110 West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

MAU will also be the featured film for the opening nights of ADFF:LA (October 14-17), ADFF: Toronto (November 3-7), ADFF: Vancouver (November 10-13) and ADFF:DC ( January 6-9, 2022). Bruce Mau and Bisi Williams will attend ADFF:LA’s opening night in West Hollywood and ADFF: Toronto’s opening night. ADFF:LA will take place at Helms Bakery District in Culver City. Attendees of ADFF:NY and ADFF:LA will have the opportunity to experience short films in the ADFF Lounge in a robust home theater setup provided by LG SIGNATURE.

Other films of note joining ADFF:NY’s 2021 lineup include the NY Premiere of Breuer’s Bohemia and Beyond Zero. In the film Breuer’s Bohemia, Director James Crump explores a vibrant period of midcentury modern design and culture as seen through the influential New England houses designed by celebrated Bauhaus furniture maker and iconic twentieth-century architect, Marcel Breuer for his circle of clients and friends. Beyond Zero, written and directed by Nathan Harvey, follows Interface Founder & Chairman Ray Anderson’s unique approach to achieving sustainability at the corporate level and the purposeful transformation Interface underwent to become one of the most sustainable manufacturing companies in the world. Both directors will be in New York for Q&As following their respective screenings.
