Magnolia Pictures debuted the official trailer for Dalíland, the drama film starring Ben Kingsley as the famous painter Salvador Dalí and explores his strange sexless marriage to his wife, Gala played by Barbara Sukowa. Also starring in the film are Christopher Briney, Ezra Miller, Andreja Pejic, and Suki Waterhouse.
Directed by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol, American Psycho, The Notorious Bettie Page, The Moth Diaries), Dalíland world premiered as the closing night film of the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, and opens in theaters and on digital on June 9, 2023.
Ben Kingsley stars as the titular Salvador Dalí, one of the most world-renowned artists of the 20th century and focuses on the later years of the strange and fascinating marriage between Dalí and his wife, Gala (Barbara Sukowa), as their seemingly unshakable bond begins to stress and fracture. Set in New York and Spain in 1974, the film is told through the eyes of James (Christopher Briney), a young assistant keen to make his name in the art world, who helps the eccentric and mercurial Dalí prepare for a big gallery show. Rupert Graves, Suki Waterhouse, Andreja Pejic and Ezra Miller also star.
“It’s about the beginning and the end of someone’s carer and marriage. It’s bittersweet and there’s a lot of comedy in it,” says director Harron. “Dali and his wife Gala had this legendary marriage, but it was a marriage without sex. It was based on her incredible belief in his art, she was a voyeur and had sex with other men. But she had absolute faith in his genius.”
