Directed by Liora Spilk Bialostozky, Pedro, a documentary on plastic artist and designer Pedro Friedeberg will feature in Mexico City’s National Autonomous University of Mexico International Film Festival (FICUNAM) as part of the “AHORA MEXICO” competition, which awards the best in contemporary Mexican cinema. FICUNAM will hold its thirteenth edition from June 1st to June 11th, 2023.
After 10 years of filming, Spilk’s debut film will be part of FICUNAM, the first edition of which (in 2011) coincided with the first shootings of this long-term project helmed by the young filmmaker, herself a graduate of UNAM’s School of Political and Social Sciences.
Pedro shows an intimate approach to the life and works of the internationally celebrated plastic artist and designer Pedro Friedeberg. Spilk’s film will be shown at the director’s alma mater, UNAM, having previously had its world premiere as part of the Documentary Competition of Morelia International Film Festival 2022, and more recently being featured in Malaga Film Festival 2023.
Pedro tells the story of a young filmmaker’s efforts to approach renowned artist Pedro Friedeberg. The contrast between the two characters’ private moments and the artist’s public appearances sketch a tender yet comical portrait of a fantastical figure of the Mexican art world.
