One Night With Adela (Una Noche Con Adela), written and directed by Hugo Ruiz, will have its world premiere in the Midnight Section of the 2023 Tribeca Festival.
The film is the first part of a feature trilogy fully shot in one long sequence shot in the streets of Madrid.
One Night with Adela is writer-director Hugo Ruiz’s opera prima, after shorts such as Taxi fuera de servicio, S.O.S. and La cena. And, leading the cast in Ruiz’s feature debut is Laura Galán, recent Goya Best New Actor winner for her performance in Cerdita.
Adela, a street cleaner who works the nightshift in the city of Madrid, is an empty being, sad and troubled. Tonight, at the end of her shift, she will settle scores with those she considers responsible for making her life what it is: human ruin.
When asked, how did the story come about?, director Hugo Ruiz said, “Since I was little, I had a kind of obsession with street cleaners who work the night shift. I always thought they were the ones who really closed a city at night, and I’d imagine their lives as they went walking through the empty streets of the city. When I saw Victoria, a German film made in one long sequence shot, about the life of a girl, one night in Berlin, I knew I wanted to tell a story in that way, with a female street cleaner as the main character. That’s how Adela was born.”
