The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) voted The Zone of Interest the Best Picture of 2023, along with Best Director for Jonathan Glazer, Best Actress for Sandra Hüller (who also won for The Zone of Interest) and Best Music/Score.
Top film awards went to Anatomy of a Fall for Best Film Not in the English Language along with Best Editing; Best Documentary/Non-Fiction Film went to Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros; and Best Animation went to The Boy and the Heron
In the gender-neutral acting categories, Leading Performances honors went to Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, and Emma Stone for Poor Things; and Supporting Performances honors went to Rachel McAdams for Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association chose director Agnieszka Holland as the recipient of this year’s Career Achievement Award. “Few directors have been as fearlessly confrontational with their historical gaze as Agnieszka Holland has across decades, and we’re thrilled to honor her this year,” said LAFCA president Robert Abele. “With moral clarity, deep empathy and invigorating filmmaking, her work lays bare the damage that oppressive regimes and sociopolitical conflicts wreak on everyday souls. At a time of increasing worldwide unrest, with authoritarianism on the rise, Holland’s fiercely humane films remind us history isn’t entirely behind us, and that a vibrantly political cinema is more vital now than ever.”
