A24 revealed the new official trailer (see the first trailer) for Love Lies Bleeding, the romantic thriller film starring Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov with Dave Franco and Ed Harris.
Kristen Stewart stars as gym manager who falls hard for a bodybuilder played by Katy O’Brian and gets pulled into her criminal family.
Release Date
Directed by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding world premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and will be released in select theaters on March 8, and everywhere on March 15.
Synopsis
From Director Rose Glass comes an electric new love story; reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.
Reviews
Deadline reviewed the film at Sundance, and wrote, “Stewart and O’Brian are electric as the toxic, uhaul duo of star-crossed psychos in love. Stewart, having tackled a diverse array of roles, demonstrates her expansive range, leaving no doubt about her acting ability. O’Brian shines as an emerging talent, an actress who embraces and confidently portrays her full authentic self on screen.”
Giving the film only 2 out of 5 starts, and calling it a “forgettable thriller” in their review, Guardian wrote, “We’re in familiar small-town crime territory. Tragic lovers sinking into a murk of violence, with the major distinguisher being their gender, two women giving a queer female spin to a subgenre usually dominated by men. But other than some eye-opening sex scenes, their sexuality and gender does very little to differentiate an age-old story, any original detail or observation buried in a mess of cliches.”
Indiewire review gave the film a B, writing, “Glass has a sly, dark sense of humor, and “Love Lies Bleeding” packs a number of laughs inside its already-stuffed genre mash-up; sometimes, it’s a simple line reading by Stewart (who delivers one of the all-time great “yups” here), other times, it’s a well-placed pack of cigarettes that appear at the worst of moments to tempt Lou. Co-star Anna Baryshnikov also frequently threatens to steal the movie, playing local Daisy, who is obsessed with Lou in ways that are initially hilarious, and later prove to be her undoing.”
