Synopsis

In The Animal Kingdom, a visionary new thriller that drops viewers into an extraordinary world where mutations in human genetics cause people to transform into hybrid creatures, François (Roman Duris) does everything he can to save his wife, who is affected by this mysterious condition. As some of the creatures disappear into a nearby forest, François embarks with Emile (Paul Kircher), their 16-year-old son, on a quest to find her with help from a local police officer (Adèle Exarchopoulos). From acclaimed director Thomas Cailley, the film world premiered as the opening night selection of Cannes Un Certain Regard.

Reviews

Variety reviewed the film, writing, “The Animal Kingdom” isn’t a traditional genre movie so much as a coming-of-age story with a creature-feature twist — picture a moody French “Teen Wolf,” minus the laughs. The project calls for more VFX than you might expect from an art film, though Cailley mostly takes the M. Night Shyamalan approach, which is to say, he suggests more than he shows.”

Rating the film a B in their review, Collider wrote, “While there’s a complex sci-fi concept at the heart of The Animal Kingdom, the movie rightfully chooses to put character above worldbuilding. That’s why, instead of spending too long explaining the rules of the mutations, the film throws us in the middle of a complicated family drama that anchors the sci-fi story. While there’s a phenomenal cast of characters in The Animal Kingdom, we mostly follow François (Roman Duris) and Émile (Paul Kircher), father and son led away from their home due to the disease. François’ wife has turned into a Creature, and once she’s transferred to a compound in the South of France, the family moves to stay closer to her, hoping for an eventual cure and reunion. Unfortunately, chaos will soon invade their lives after an accident releases dozens of Creatures into the wild, including François’ wife. To make matters even more complicated, Émile also starts to change, a fact he does what he can to hide from other people.”
