Oscilloscope Laboratories revealed the official trailer and announced a one night only theatrical release of Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All, the documentary on the iconic folk rock duo Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls.
Release Date
Directed by Alexandria Bombach, Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All world premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and will screen in theaters on Wednesday, April 10, then on digital on May 7. There will also be a screening and live performance with the band in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, March 29.
Synopsis
With forty years of making music as the iconic folk-rock band Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have made their mark as musicians, songwriters, and dedicated activists. They have represented radical self-acceptance to many, leading multiple generations of fans to say, “the Indigo Girls saved my life.” Still, Amy and Emily battled misogyny, homophobia, and a harsh cultural climate chastising them for not fitting into a female pop star mold. With joy, humor, and heart-warming earnestness, Sundance award-winning director Alexandria Bombach brings us into a contemporary conversation with Amy and Emily—alongside decades of the band’s home movies and intimate present-day verité.

The Hollywood Reporter review commends the ‘candidness’ of the documentary, writing, “Ray and Saliers don’t shy away from addressing the sexism and homophobia that largely excluded them from more conventional popularity. They admit they never fit in with the mousy artists of the traditional folk scene, which at first made it tough for them to find a larger audience. As Ray astutely points out, “They can understand Rage Against the Machine, but they don’t understand the Indigo Girls.” After all, if you truly listen to their lyrics, they’re no more niche than other wholehearted wordsmiths like Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks or Dolly Parton. They have a pure listenability. What made them controversial was their package: They were openly lesbian, openly masc and openly left-wing.”
