IFC Films shared the official trailer for In a Violent Nature, the Canadian slasher horror film starring Ry Barrett as Johnny, a mute killer who targets a group of teenagers in the Ontario wilderness – with the story mostly seen from the killer’s point of view.
As Sundance wrote, “In a change of pace and reversal of roles from the typical slasher narrative style, viewers found themselves walking alongside the killer instead of the victims, shedding new light — and blood — on a perspective not often, if ever, seen in many horror films.”
Also starring in the film are Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, and Sam Roulston.
Release Date
Directed by Chris Nash, making his directorial debut, In a Violent Nature world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and opens in theaters on May 31, before streaming on Shudder later this year.
Synopsis
When a locket is taken from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.
The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way.
Reviews
Indiewire review graded the film a mediocre C, writing, “The effect is interesting in theory, but largely unsatisfying in execution (pun very much intended). Played by Ry Barrett, Johnny walks around the woods like a braindead killing machine as Pierce Derks’ camera follows behind him for minutes on end, the soundtrack completely silent save for the steady chorus of leaves crunching underfoot; while Nash stops well short of anything that might be described as “slow cinema,” “In a Violent Nature” definitely isn’t in a hurry to get anywhere, which would be more of a problem if it had anywhere to go.”
