Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (The Lodge, Goodnight Mommy) are back with another masterpiece, The Devil’s Bath, and debuted the official trailer that promises to be just as eerie as the pair’s previous films.
The film, starring Anja Plaschg, David Scheid, and Maria Hofstätter premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear; and makes its North American Premiere as an Official Selection of Tribeca Festival 2024.
The Devil’s Bath, shot on gorgeous 35mm, is based on real historical events about a deeply religious woman named Agnes, in the 18th Century Austria, who has just married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long array of chores, responsibilities, and expectations.
Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her inner prison.
The Devil’s Bath is based on historical court records about a shocking, hitherto unexplored chapter of European history, giving a voice to the invisible and unheard women of the rural past.
Watch the official trailer for The Devil’s Bath, which opens in cinemas at IFC Center in New York City on June 21st, followed by Shudder on June 28th.
