After gaining public attention from its interesting marketing campaign, the new horror/thriller film by director Oz Perkins also gained the approval of film critics with some stating that it’s the best horror film of 2024.

Starring the film are Maika Monroe, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, and decorated actor Nicholas Cage, who has been hidden from the film promotional materials.

Release Date

Directed by Oz Perkins, Longlegs was previously screened at the Los Angeles’s Beyond Fest. The film opens in theaters with a release date of July 12, 2024.

Synopsis

In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, director Oz Perkins described Longlegs as, “So it’s The Silence of the Lambs but it’s also kind of Zodiac, it’s sort of Seven. There’s kind of a pattern, a cipher, the sort of things you recognize. I’ll say the word Manson early on in the movie, do you know what I mean? You make it fair. But then you do your truth on the other side.”

Reviews

Bill Bria on a Slashfilm review gave the film a score of 10/10, calling the film a masterpiece, writing “this is the rare horror film where the first 10 minutes of the movie may be the most horrifying, establishing a powerfully unsettling mood for the remainder of the feature.”

Matt Donato on an Inverse review called the film the best horror film of the year, writing “Longlegs is diabolical. It’s a satanic powerhouse that drags the audience through hell and back. Its harsh, in-your-face violence is felt viscerally, its cinematography bathes in artful repugnance that’s organically horror-forward, and its influential odes to classic horror-thriller procedurals are sickeningly effective.”
