Greenwich Entertainment released a new trailer for ‘Close to You’ starring Academy Award nominated actor Elliot Page in his first feature film role after transitioning. The film premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and received a gala screening at 2023 Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival.

Presenting the story as a homecoming drama film of a trans man coming back home to meet his family and old friends, the film is written by British writer/director Dominic Savage and Elliot Page himself. The film features mostly improvised dialog following an outline on the script.

Release Date

Directed by Dominic Savage, ‘Close to You’ opens in select US theaters on August 16, 2024. The film will release in Canada and United Kingdom a week later on August 23, 2024.

Synopsis

Sam (Elliot Page) hasn’t been home since his transition. After four years in Toronto, he takes a long-dreaded trip back to his hometown for his father’s birthday. Once there, he confronts unresolved wounds and reconnects with an old flame.

In an interview with Variety, Page shared his thoughts of working on the film with the non-traditional script, saying “This was absolutely thrilling every single day. Because of the process, I’ve never done anything like this before. The script has a description and just that. There’s zero dialogue. You’re walking into every scene totally bare.” He continues with, “It’s like a dance. You’re really existing in it. It had me tired in moments but incredibly exhilarated.”

Reviews

Marya E. Gates praised Page’s performance in a RogerEbert.com review, writing “Page has such a distinct vision of what this experience feels like for someone like Sam, bringing the character’s interiority, joy, and rage to the surface with a lived-in rawness. In a sense, “Close to You” also serves as Page the Movie Star’s reintroduction to audiences, showing he is a singular talent as ever.”

Kate Erbland in an Indiewire review gave the film a B- score, writing “there’s clearly a level of closeness and respect between Savage and Page. How else – why else – would Page be willing to get so vulnerable for the project, which sees him slipping inside a character that many viewers will likely accept as a Page stand-in.”
