Release Date
Directed by Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon, ‘The Falling Star’ opens in theaters on August 30, 2024.
Synopsis
An official selection of the Telluride and Locarno Film Festivals, the latest caper from Abel & Gordon filters the language of film noir through their characteristically colorful palette to create a series of deceptively minimalistic set pieces that recall the best of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton. Abel plays Boris, a former activist hiding from his dark past, keeping in the shadows as a barkeeper until a one-armed vigilante finally hunts him down. The fortuitous appearance of a double – the depressive recluse Dom (also played by Abel) – seems to offer the perfect decoy. But his tenacious and loopy ex-wife, the private eye Fiona (Gordon), could foil their master plan.
Reviews
Peter Debruge in a Variety review compares the film to Aki Kaurismäki’s ‘Fallen Leaves’, writing “Both films unfold in and around neighborhood bars, taking a pathetic interest in the lives of their patrons. But this one desperately needs that magnetic tug audiences typically feel when a sad lonely man and a sad lonely woman orbit one another for 90-odd minutes. Here, we get 98 very odd minutes with hardly a hint of romance. It’s that spark — lost in Paris, perhaps — ‘The Falling Star’ lacks.”
Aurore Engelen in a Cineuropa praised the film, writing “‘The Falling Star’ has all the ingredients which have previously ensured the success of the incredibly creative duo composed of Abel & Gordon: a “homemade” aesthetic enhanced by their taste for all things artisanal”
