Synopsis
Businessman Hideki (Arata Iura) travels from Japan to Montana after convincing his boss (Ayako Fujitani) he can turn a failing ranch there into a successful business producing premium wagyu beef. After meeting ranch owner Peg (Robin Weigert) and ranch hand Javier (Goya Robles), he quickly learns his plan may not be as simple as he believed. As things start to unravel, cultures clash and Hideki soon finds himself between two worlds.
“The story of Tokyo Cowboy was born out of my own experience living as a foreigner in a foreign land,” said director Marc Marriott. “I had a profoundly impactful experience living in Japan. I went as one person and I came home changed.”
Reviews
Tynan Yanaga in a Film Enquiry review gave the film a positive review, writing, “By the latter half, Tokyo Cowboy is a bit shaggy in places, but we stick around for the character moments because they feel mostly benevolent and genuine.”
Alan Ng in a Film Threat review gave the film a 7.5/10 score, writing, “Director Marriott keeps it within the indie drama spectrum, which allows him to focus on the human drama, which lies at the heart of this film.”
