Release Date

Directed by Jason Yu, ‘Sleep’ opens in US theaters and on VOD on September 27, 2024.

Synopsis

‘Sleep’ follows newlyweds Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun, ‘Parasite’) and Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi), whose domestic bliss is disrupted when Hyun-su begins speaking in his sleep, ominously stating, “Someone’s inside.”  From that night on, whenever he falls asleep, Hyun-su transforms into someone else, with no recollection of what happened the night before. Overwhelmed with anxiety that he may hurt himself or their young family, Soo-jin can barely sleep because of this irrational fear. Despite treatment, Hyun-su’s sleepwalking only intensifies, and Soo-jin begins to feel that her unborn child may be in danger.

Reviews

Kambole Campbell in a Time Out review gave the film a score of 4/5, writing, “Sleep efficiently details this cruel accumulation of stresses driving the couple apart… Coupled with some smart, subtle production design as the apartment turns more and more claustrophobic, it makes for an impressive debut.”

Kate Erbland in an IndieWire review also gave the film a positive review, giving it a score of B+, writing, “Sleep is fun enough the first time out, but a second watch will likely reveal even more natty twists and smart scripting, nothing to snooze at here.”
