Elizabeth Banks stars in ‘A Mistake’ the medical drama film based on a best-selling novel of the same name by Carl Shuker, that tells the story of a surgeon facing the aftermath of a mistake while operating on a patient.

‘A Mistake’ had its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and was screened at the 2024 New Zealand International Film Festival.

Starring the film alongside Elizabeth Banks are Simon McBurney, Mickey Summer, Rena Owen, Fern Sutherland, Joel Tobeck, and Emmett Skilton.

Release Date

Directed by New Zealand-born filmmaker Christine Jeffs (Rain, Sylvia), ‘A Mistake’ opens in theaters on September 20, 2024.

Synopsis

Elizabeth is a gifted surgeon–the only female consultant at her hospital. But while operating on a young woman, something goes horribly wrong. In the midst of a new scheme to publicly report surgeons’ performance, her colleagues begin to close ranks, and Elizabeth’s life is thrown into disarray. Tough and abrasive, Elizabeth has survived and succeeded in this most demanding field. But can she survive a single mistake?

Reviews

Brittany Patrice Witherspoon in a Next Best Picture review gave the film an 8/10 score, writing, “With powerhouse storytelling that results in a more than satisfying ending, “A Mistake” is emotionally gripping in all the ways a medical drama should be. The compelling nature of the narrative and character study simply cannot be denied.”

Mae Abdulbaki in a Screen Rant review gave the film a 3.5/5 score, writing, “A Mistake is thorough in examining what happens when a medical mistake occurs, and the consequences that come up because of a moment gone wrong.”
