Fresh of its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, here is a first look clip from ‘Queer’, the new romance drama film by Luca Guadagnino, the acclaimed Oscar-nominated director of ‘Call Me by Your Name’.
Adapted from the 1985 novel from author William S. Burroughs, the film is set in 1940’s Mexico City, following William Lee (played by Daniel Craig) and his romance with a young discharged American Navy serviceman (played by Drew Starkey).
The film’s synopsis from Venice Film Festival, “William Lee, an American expat in Mexico City in his early 50s, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, a young student new to the city, shows him, for the first time, that it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody.”
Alongside Craig and Starkey, the film also stars Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege, Ariel Schulman, Omar Apollo, and David Lowery.
“If I wasn’t in this movie, I would want to be in it – These are the kinds of film I want to see, I want to make, I want to be out there – they’re challenging but they’re incredibly accessible.” said lead actor Daniel Craig on the film.
‘Queer’ will next screen at the Toronto International Film Festival and the as the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival later this year. A24 has picked up the film for release in the US.
