Palme d’Or winning director of ‘Dheepan,’ Jacques Audiard returns with ‘Emilia Pérez’ the critically acclaimed genre-bending musical film following four women in Mexico in a story of crime and self-discovery.
The film stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez.
‘Emilia Pérez’ had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize, Soundtrack Award, and the Best Actress award for its four leading actresses. The film was also screened at the 51st Telluride Film Festival and the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. It’s next scheduled to screen at the 62nd New York Film Festival.
It was recently selected as the French entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, ‘Emilia Pérez’ opens in select US theaters on November 1, 2024 before streaming on Netflix on November 13, 2024.
Synopsis
From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes Emilia Pérez, an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) enlists Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.

Peter Debruge in a Variety review praised the film and the lead actress performance, writing, “Emilia Pérez emerges as a powerful, unfiltered portrait of someone who challenges several stereotypes at once. That’s a testament to leading lady Karla Sofía Gascón and the audacity of Audiard.”
David Rooney in a Hollywood Reporter review also praised the film, writing, “With Emilia Pérez, [Audiard] has made something fresh, full of vitality and affecting, held aloft by its own quietly soaring power.”
