Sean Baker’s Anora topped the 2024 Houston Film Critics Society Awards, winning 3 honors including Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Mikey Madison, and Best Screenplay.
Ralph Fiennes won Best Actor for his role in Conclave, which also nabbed the award for Best Ensemble Cast; Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain and Zoë Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez.
Other awards including the Texas Independent Film Award – for the best film made in Texas – went to Runaway Radio; Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Feature; Will & Harper won Best Documentary Feature; and The Wild Robot won Best Animated Film.
“Small, intimate, character-driven stories seemed to be the soup du jour favored by many of our members this year,” says Travis Leamons, President of the organization. “2024 may not have been a great cinema year overall, but if you string together the films favored most by the Houston critics you’ll see a year defined by obstacles in one’s pursuit of happiness, virtue, and prosperity. All of which mirror this particular moment in time.”
