Opening in US cinemas this month, here is the official trailer for Julie Keeps Quiet, the drama starring Tessa Van den Broeck, Ruth Becquart, Ken De Bouw, Claire Bodson, and Laurent Caron. It was chosen as the Belgian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
In the movie, executive produced by tennis champion Naomi Osaka, a star player must choose whether to speak up after a student’s suicide and a coach’s suspension shakes an elite youth tennis academy
Directed by Leonardo van Dijl, Julie Keeps Quiet world premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Critics’ Week section, where it won the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution and SACD Award; and will be released in US theaters on March 28.
As the star player at an elite youth tennis academy, Julie’s life revolves around the game she loves. She trains hard, pausing only for class or physical therapy before returning to the gym fixated on making it into the Belgian Tennis Federation. When her coach Jérémy is suddenly suspended following the suicide of one of his female protégées, all the players at the academy are encouraged to speak up about their experiences with him. Julie, however, decides to keep quiet. Despite strong suspicions from those around her that Julie’s relationship with Jérémy was inappropriate at best, her persistent silence begins to speak volumes. Confused and full of anxiety, the pressure she once channeled solely towards training shifts inward, affecting her confidence, her focus, and her game.
The Guardian review gave the film 4 of 5 stars, writing, “Yet the point here is that everyone is keeping quiet. The weather of the film, its atmosphere of normality doggedly pursued, is governed by that quiet. Van Dijl shows us that the academy’s staff realise that the prime candidate for accuser-in-chief would of course be Julie herself.”
