The first trailer debuted today for Rust, the long delayed Western drama film set in 1880s Kansas, starring Alec Baldwin.

Directed by Joel Souza, Baldwin stars as Harland Rust, a notorious outlaw who emerges from hiding to rescue his 13-year-old grandson, Lucas Hollister (portrayed by Patrick Scott McDermott), from execution after a tragic accident. Also starring in the movie are Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, and Jake Busey.

Rust has been under a cloud of controversy due to a tragic incident during its production. In October 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life when a prop firearm discharged on set, also injuring director Joel Souza. Alec Baldwin, who was handling the firearm, faced involuntary manslaughter charges, which were later dismissed in July 2024 after the court determined that New Mexico police and prosecutors had deliberately withheld evidence from the defense team.

Despite the challenges and delays, Rust made its world premiere at Camerimage Film Festival and is slated for release on May 2, 2025, in select theaters and digital platforms.

Here is the synopsis, “In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named “Preacher” (Travis Fimmel).”
