4K Restoration of René Clément’s ‘Forbidden Games’ Opens at Film Forum in New York City

Forbidden Games (Jeux Interdits), the 1952 French war drama by René Clément based on François Boyer’s novel Les Jeux Interdits, will run in a new 4K restoration at Film Forum in New York City from Friday, May 9 to Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Starring in the classic film are Brigitte Fossey, Georges Poujouly, and Lucien Hubert

“Michel! Michel! Michel!” France 1940, as a refugee column trudges along a country road, a dog makes a break for it, with its tiny blonde mistress in pursuit — and then the German fighters strike. But if 5-year-old Brigitte Fossey’s understanding of death is limited as she strokes her mother’s cold face, at least she can bury the dog discarded by her peasant rescuers, aided by 11-year-old farm boy Georges Poujouly. As they build a special, secret friendship, their pet cemetery steadily grows, topped by crosses stolen from graveyards, even as the adults play their own games of grotesque peasant feuds… And then Fossey shouts his name again.

A masterpiece of French post-war cinema by director René Clément (who would make the classic thriller Purple Noon, starring Alain Delon, eight years later), adapted by the legendary team of Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost from Boyer’s successful novel, with a haunting hit score played by guitar virtuoso Narciso Yepes, it initially did so-so box office and screened only on the fringes of the Cannes Festival, then nearly got shut out of Venice — where it won its top prize, the Golden Lion — and then became a worldwide art house smash and Clément’s second Best Foreign Film Oscar winner (following the previous year’s The Walls of Malapaga).

David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds Opens April 25 in Bay Area

The body horror drama film The Shrouds directed by David Cronenberg and starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce along with Sandrine Holt opens on April 25 in theaters in the Bay Area.

The film will play in the following cinemas: Roxie Theater, San Francisco AMC Mercado 20, Santa Clara Rialto Cinemas, Sebastopol Tower Theater, Sacramento

Set in an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy. Written following the death of the director’s wife, the new film from David Cronenberg is both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia, set in an ominous world of self-driving cars, data theft, and A.I. personal assistants. Offering Cronenberg’s customary balance of malevolence and wit, The Shrouds is a sly and thought-provoking consideration of the corporeal and the digital, the mortal and the infinite. 2024 / France, Canada / 119 minutes.

Rebel Wilson and Jason Isaacs Star in the Pop Musical Drama Juliet & Romeo

From writer-director Timothy Scott Bogart (Spinning Gold / Last Full Measure), Juliet & Romeo is a reimagining of one of the iconic love story

This innovative twist on the Shakespearean classic stars Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect / JoJo Rabbit), Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus / Harry Potter franchise / Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris), Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding / the Shrek franchise), Rupert Graves (Sherlock / Emma), Tony Award-winner, Dan Fogler (A Complete Unknown / Fantastic Beasts franchise / The Walking Dead), and Derek Jacobi (Gladiator II / The King’s Speech).

Also featured in the film are Clara Rugaard (Love Gets A Room / Black Mirror) and Jamie Ward (The Last Supper / His Dark Materials / Tyrant), bring the Star-Crossed Lovers to life, with Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Coda/ Vikings), Nicholas Podany (Saturday Night Live / Hello, Tomorrow!) and GRAMMY Award-winners, Tayla Parx and Ledisi, rounding out the all-star cast.

Juliet & Romeo opens in UK cinemas nationwide for a special one-night event on 11th June, 2025

Juliet & Romeo will be the first film in an exciting movie-musical trilogy based around the real-life 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare’s greatest tale, with the world’s most famous lovers finding themselves central figures in an epic journey of battles and betrayal, the iconic duo turning the tides on history as we know it.

Speaking about the challenges of bringing one of Shakespeare’s most renowned tales to the big screen, Writer/Director Timothy Scott Bogart said “Romeo & Juliet is one of the most romantic stories ever told. And the challenge for any storyteller is to find a different colour that they can add. To work from a different palette. To me, what Shakespeare did was to express the poetry of his time. So, in searching for the poetry of our time, we turn to music… Original Pop Music, as a way to truly dive into our character’s journeys – which I believe makes our film different than any other version that’s ever been done before. The greatest love story of all time, set to the greatest music of our time.”

Added Bogart, “The key to all of this was finding a cast that could bring all these wonderful themes and relationships to life. Casting the remarkable Rebel Wilson as Juliet’s mom, Lady Capulet, we are able to explore that mother and daughter relationship like never before. Rebel’s extraordinary portrayal—whose own complex experience of motherhood profoundly shapes the lives of history’s most legendary lovers, just elevated everything!”

Excited about bringing her Lady Capulet to the big screen Rebel Wilson said “It was a really interesting and creative opportunity to play Lady Capulet in this film. I was playing a famous mother after just becoming a mother myself. But overall I was attracted to this project because of the excellent music and the chance to play really against type as an actress. Filming on location in ancient castles in Italy was very special as well – not to mention the stellar cast: Rupert, Jason, Sir Derek and the young talented cast who I just love and know they have an amazing future ahead of them.”

Three-time Oscar-Winning Production Designer, Dante Ferretti (Hugo / The Aviator / Gangs Of New York), and original songs and music from GRAMMY-Winner, Evan Kidd Bogart (Beyonce’s “Halo” / Rihanna’s “SOS”) and Justin Gray (Oz The Great And Powerful / The Lego Movie), all breathe new life into the theatrical classic.
