Filmmakers Steph Ching and Ellen Martinez (Starz’s After Spring) explore the urgent political issues surrounding housing inequality in the documentary Slumlord Millionaire.
Executive produced by Emmy® winners Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith, it debuts in New York City on June 6 at DCTV Firehouse Cinema located at 87 Lafayette Street, NY. Following its theatrical run, Slumlord Millionaire will premiere on the PBS series VOCES this Summer.
Here is the synopsis: With rents skyrocketing by an average of 30% nationwide in the last five years, and Manhattan’s average rent hitting nearly $5,000, some landlords employ ruthless tactics to displace long-term tenants: cutting off essential services, neglecting vital repairs, and ignoring infestations. Slumlord Millionaire powerfully portrays the resilience of determined residents and the unwavering efforts of nonprofit attorneys fighting for the fundamental right to housing against predatory landlords.
Directors Steph Ching and Ellen Martinez stated, “We are thrilled to premiere our film theatrically in New York, the very city where it was created. The housing crisis is a pressing nationwide issue, and we aspire for this film to amplify the voices of those directly impacted, shedding light on the profound human cost of gentrification. Through these stories, we aim to inspire thoughtful dialogue and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by communities in the face of change.”
