A24 debuted the official trailer for Eddington, a high-stakes, COVID‑era Western thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix stars as Joe Cross, the morally conflicted sheriff of Eddington, New Mexico; Pedro Pascal as Ted Garcia, the charismatic mayor on the brink of re‑election and Emma Stone as Louise Cross, Joe’s emotionally guarded wife. Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, with Austin Butler round out the all-star ensemble cast.

Set against the backdrop of the early COVID pandemic, the film explores how fear, misinformation, and conspiracy can tear at the fabric of community – turning neighbors into adversaries.

Eddington made its world premiere in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to screen Sydney Film Festival, and is slated to open the Fantasia International Film Festival. It opens in theaters on July 18, 2025.

Here is the official synopsis:

In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.

Ari Aster discussed Eddington at Cannes, saying, “I wrote this film in a state of fear and anxiety about the world, and I wanted to try to pull back and show what it feels like to live in a world where nobody can agree on what is real anymore. The last 20 years, we’ve fallen into this age of hyper individualism.”

He added, “We’re on a dangerous road, and I feel like we’re living through an experiment that’s gone wrong. I think people feel very powerless and very fearful.”
