Stranger Eyes is a gripping surveillance thriller film from Singaporean filmmaker Yeo Siew Hua, starring Lee Kang-sheng alongside Wu Chien-ho and Anicca Panna.
This tightly wound mystery follows a couple whose young daughter goes missing, only to discover disturbing video recordings of their own lives arriving mysteriously at their doorstep.
Stranger Eyes made history as the first Singaporean film selected for the main competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, contending for the prestigious Golden Lion. It continued its global circuit at the New York Film Festival’s Main Slate, before opening the 35th Singapore International Film Festival. It will be released in U.S. theaters starting August 29, 2025.
Here is the synopsis:
After enduring months of a fruitless police investigation into the disappearance of their daughter, a young, estranged couple, Junyang and Peiying, realize they are bring filmed surreptitiously when they begin receiving mysterious packages at their door containing DVDs with footage of their daily lives. The moments captured are unnerving not only for the violation of their privacy, but for what is exposed about Junyang and Peiying’s relationship on a most intimate level. Suspecting their voyeur is responsible for taking their daughter, the couple embark on a desperate mission to seek him out, only to find the truth of his identity is more complicated than it seems.
Explaining the magical realism in his film, Yeo Siew Hua said, “I have always been told that my films straddle a thin line between the real and the surreal/dream/virtual in a way that seems to recall a kind of magical realism. For me, these moments where reality breaks down, helps me to de-familiarize the everyday and puts in question certain assumptions we take for granted.”
