Sweden has selected Tarik Saleh’s political thriller Eagles of the Republic as its submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
Expressing his appreciation for the honor, Tarik Saleh said, “We are honored to have been selected to represent Sweden in such a strong year for Swedish film. Our journey only just started, but it will be extra fun to screen the film in Toronto with this recognition.”
Eagles of the Republic had its world premiere in the main competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and will screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
It is a compelling political thriller set within Egypt’s glamorous yet tightly controlled film industry. The story follows George Fahmy, one of Egypt’s most beloved actors, who is coerced into starring in a government-commissioned film and becomes entangled in an affair with a general’s wife, drawing him into the underbelly of political power games.
As the final installment of Saleh’s acclaimed Cairo Trilogy, following The Nile Hilton Incident and Boy from Heaven, the film continues his exploration of political and social power structures.
The Swedish Oscar Committee, led by Petter Mattsson of the Swedish Film Institute, chose Eagles of the Republic from a shortlist that also included The Dance Club and the documentary Israel Palestine on Swedish TV 1958-1989 (Israel-Palestina på svensk TV 1958–1989).
