The Philippines has chosen Magellan, the historical drama film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Lav Diaz, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
Magellan is a sweeping historical drama portraying the final months of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It offers a haunting reconsideration of the mythic tale of discovery, emphasizing his inner turmoil and his role in the Portuguese and Spanish colonial campaigns in Southeast Asia in the early 16th century.
The film stars Gael García Bernal as Magellan, supported by Ângela Azevedo, Amado Arjay Babon, Ronnie Lazaro, Hazel Orencio, Tomás Alves, Bong Cabrera, and Brontis Jodorowsky.
The world premiere took place at Cannes Film Festival, followed by screenings at the upcoming New York Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
The Film Academy of the Philippines and Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) made the announcement on Monday during the opening ceremony of FDCP’s Philippine Film Industry Month 2025.
