Sierra Falconer’s Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake) Captures Childhood Nostalgia | Trailer

Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake) marks the feature directorial debut of Sierra Falconer, a semi-autobiographical anthology drama film adapted from her time growing up in Interlochen, Michigan.

Starring in the movie, set against the lush backdrop of Green Lake, are Maren Heary, Jim Kaplan, Karsen Liotta, Dominic Bogart, Tenley Kellogg, and Emily Hall. Falconer not only directed, but also wrote and produced the film as her senior thesis for UCLA’s MFA program.

Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake) made its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and opens in select U.S. theaters on September 12, 2025, beginning at the IFC Center in New York, with a national expansion to follow.

As a single summer unfolds around Green Lake, the lives of its residents and visitors intertwine in moments of change and self-discovery. A girl bonds with her grandparents through sailing and birding, a boy battles for first chair at a prestigious arts camp, a fisherman and a young mother are an odd pair in pursuit of adventure and the perfect catch, and two sisters savor their final days running a bed-and-breakfast before college pulls them apart.

In an interview with Park Record, Falconer described her film as loosely autobiographical, “The autobiographical part of the film is just that this is where I grew up, and I think you can learn a lot about a person by understanding where they’re from. I’m trying to, as truthfully as possible, capture what it felt like to grow up there. Those moments and the lessons that the characters learn are true to me and what I learned growing up.”
