Sydney Sweeney steps into the boxing ring for Christy, a fierce biographical drama film directed by David Michôd. She portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin, rising from her small-town roots in West Virginia to become a trailblazer in women’s professional boxing.
Alongside her are Ben Foster as James V. Martin – her coach-turned-abusive husband, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Chad L. Coleman, Ethan Embry, Tony Cavalero, and Bill Kelly . Sweeney underwent over three months of rigorous training, gained more than 30 pounds, and embraced full-contact fight sequences to deliver an authentic performance.
Christy premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and opens in U.S. theaters on November 7, 2025, via Black Bear Pictures.
Here is the synopsis: Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia — until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster).
But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it — confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.
David Michôd spoke to Vanity Fair about what drew him to this film. He said, “One of the things that drew me to this story was the idea of being able to make a movie that starts, in a way, as a beautiful, wild, underdog sports movie but then starts to shift into something that’s really harrowing and, ultimately, deeply moving.”
In the same interview, Sweeney added “I was blown away that her story wasn’t more known on a universal, global level because it’s just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I’ve ever met in my entire life.”
