In the new documentary Megadoc, filmmaker Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) crafts a fly-on-the-wall documentary chronicling the ambitious – and chaotic – production of Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed sci-fi epic film Megalopolis.
The documentary features intimate access to Coppola himself, his family (Eleanor Coppola), and lead cast members including Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, and even archival glimpses of Robert De Niro and Ryan Gosling.
Megadoc made its world premiere in the Venice International Film Festival, then went on to screen at Telluride Film Festival. It opens in select U.S. cinemas on September 19, 2025.
A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, Megalopolis. The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of Megalopolis. This isn’t a record of a production on the brink, it’s a personal memoir unfolding in real time.
Figgis who says he has known Coppola for decades explained how the documentary came about, saying when he heard Coppola was about to start work on Megalopolis, he wrote to congratulate him, adding “Almost as a little afterthought, a bit of a joke, I said: ‘If you need a fly on the wall, just let me know.” Coppola called him out of the blue a few months later, saying: “‘When could you be here? Do you have a visa? Can you come now?’”
